My new lights are officially in 'Chelmsdale' Massachusetts (that's really Chelmsford, but I can't help myself). Somehow they are not due on my doorstep until tomorrow, but whatever. Here they are courtesy of PB:

I am sure you are wondering why I am going on about these lights, but the fact of the matter is these stinkin track lights were the first bit of change, which brought about the counter tops, which has now created a whole landslide and now I just want to go stick my head in a hole (or go rob a bank).

My counters are 1.5 inch thick Oak and from IKEA (not custom Mesquite as shown here), but all these custom wood people use the Waterlox which is shown here on these gorgeous counters. As I was making dinner last night (baked ziti) I remembered what a messy cook I am. There was sauce everywhere! I have 2 lbs of beeswax on it's way since I was originally set on a spoon oil finish, but I think that may not be the best choice. We may do a 2 or 3 foot section with just the oil and wax to use as a cutting/prep area. There will unfortunately be many seams since the sections are 8 ft each and I have a 10 foot run with two corners. Wood is just such a sanitary surface, I hate to ruin that everywhere by sealing it. Decisions, decisions- my head is spinning!
I am off to clean out the fridge and ponder this mess I have gotten myself into, what I really need to do is get out to the garden and dig up my dahlias and glads!

I love those lights!! They're going to look fabulous! And you asked yesterday about wood counters and sinks...my butcher block top is on my island, and not near my sink. So I don't have experience with that. I have to admit, I'm not real careful with my butcher block top...I got it used years ago. My husband brought it home for me after tearing it out of a kitchen he was remodeling. I remember him pulling into the driveway with a complete island in the bed of his truck...I was so excited! I'd been wanting one for several years. But...my point is that it was already used, and had a few knife marks on it, so I wasn't super careful. I like to call it all "character"...:) Can't wait to see your finished project!

The IKEA countertops are pretty nice, and we have used them for other projects too. I hear you on the messy sauce problem, me too! I love the lights, very "arts & crafts"! Looking forward to seeing your kitchen progress. And by the way, your kitchen isn't "off the subject" at all! In the winter we all struggle with having things to post about when nothing is being harvested, and your kitchen fits in well with the whole homestead/garden thing - after all, it's where all those yummy veggies end up!

Good call Erin, now I don't feel so bad rambling!

Michelle- if mine were for an island I wouldn't consider anything but mineral oil, all the stains and knife marks would be most welcome.

I should post my 2 paint options as well, test spots have been put up through out the kitchen...

I can't wait to see how your kitchen turns out. I can't wait to start making some changes to mine next year. I need to have a gas stove again.

Love your lights! Your kitchen looks fantastic! May I ask where you got the sink?

I love the color of that stain! What is it? We just bought ikea's oak counter tops, and I'd love to stain them a color just like that. It's beautiful!

Emily- I sent you an email as well. That countertop is not mine, but rather is showing the Waterlox sealer we used on our oak countertops. It looks amazing and the finish has held up well to this point.
