Beef

I received an e-mail today from River Rock Farm that the cows are on the way to the butcher today. After hanging for two weeks the beef will be ready.

My initial reaction was extreme sadness knowing these beautiful creatures will lose their life today. What can I say, I am a sappy animal lover! I have seen with my own eyes the humane and free life they have led until now and this does bring comfort. I hope I will continue to have the choice of eating meat raised on this farm knowing I am supporting the right way to raise heads for slaughter, not the wrong, as this is not an easy opportunity to come by.

edit: Home Scool Update- The Letter of Intent has been filed and I met with Shaun's teacher and principal yesterday. Friday will be his last day. His wonderful teacher will hold a spot for him in her class until Fall of next year, and the principle offered for him to return any time. I will bring him in for testing in May to determine his placement (K or 1st) should he return to public school for the following year. All is falling into place.

In canada schooling is like beef feed lots, herd em together, cram them full of useless crap and let them wallow in all the sh@t they make, i really think you are dodging a bullet here by not tainting your son with this outdated, deprecating mode of child management - if you can stay home save your son! You know I shave your compassion for the lives that die so you can live, I also know that you live an admiral life, giving more than you take. Hope you are feeling better, peace for all

ruralrose, I can tell what your thoughts are, lol! It amazes me as well some of the things that go on in the public school "feedlots"! Kelly, good job on getting everything together for your son and doing what's best for him. Congrats on your beef! Sad, yes, but since you are eating beef regardless, knowing the animal led a good life followed by a humane death gives us pause at the dinner table and more meaning to our "thanks"... we always can't help but think of the many animals who did not have a peaceful life and death with so many of their parts wasted... you are teaching you kids valuable lessons about their food.

How exciting! I think what you're doing is really awesome. I'm sure Shaun will greatly benefit from it. Have you looked through some of the materials yet?

Also, let us know how the beef tastes!

Kelly, if you'd like some strawberry crowns, let me know! I think they would survive the trip since you're so close.

Thomas- I am still waiting on the Math, Scinece, Art and much of the Language Arts material. The only stuff I have on hand is what we have been using to re-enforce school which are the Hooked on Phonics, and Handwriting Without Tears programs. (I sent you an e-mail on the strawberries.)

Thanks for the support everyone, it is very much appreciated!!

Thanks for posting about what is going on at school. I was curious as to what their reaction would be. Our public school system here is not good. My parents paid for Catholic school for me, plus local taxes for public school. Loved Ruralroses comment.. Wishing you all the best in the world..!!
